Hughes Receives Missouri Sports Hall of Fame Sports Achievement Award

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Westminster baseball alumni Deion Hughes ('16) was selected to receive to Missouri Sports Hall of Fame Sports Achievement Award.

Hughes will be honored at the Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony Jan. 29 at the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in Springfield, Missouri. The ceremony is set for 4 p.m. 

The award is designed to recognize individuals across the state of Missouri who have received national recognition. Hughes earned spots on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-America First Team and the D3Baseball.com All-America Third Team. 

At the end of the 2016 season, Hughes also was named the ABCA Central Region Position Player of the Year and a First Team member of the ABCA All-Region and the D3Baseball.com All-Region. To add to his postseason recognition, he was named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Player of the Year.

Hughes led the nation in 2016 with 12 wins on the mound, and was second in the nation in complete games with nine. Hughes maintained a 2.42 earned run average with a 12-2 record and three shutouts. He allowed just 24 earned runs in 89.1 innings on the mound while striking out 90. At the plate, he led the team with a .392 batting average. He produced 60 hits including 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs. He recorded 31 RBI, 44 runs and four sacrifice flies. In the field, he posted a .979 fielding percentage with 27 putouts and 19 assists. 

Hughes holds five career records at Westminster, including ERA (1.99), strikeouts (257), wins (29), complete games (17), and shutouts (8).

Westminster finished the 2016 season with a 28-15 record and earned the program's third bid to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Greenville in the SLIAC Championship.

The 2017 season begins Feb. 25-26 with a three-game home series against Nebraska Wesleyan.
