Westminster Baseball Earns Shutout Win Over Eureka

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster baseball earned a shutout win in game two of a doubleheader against Eureka, falling after a late-inning Red Devil rally in game one.

Westminster moves to 13-12 overall and 9-7 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. 

In the first inning, the Blue Jays small-balled their way to three runs, scoring first on a balk by Eureka and adding two more on an RBI groundout from Hayden Hirschvogel and a fielder's choice from Ryan Klimkiewicz. In the third, Will Stonecipher scored again on a Eureka balk.

The Blue Jays added to their lead in the fifth with a solo home run from Ryan Clavin, the eighth home run from the junior this season to make the score 5-0. 

The Red Devils rallied back in the final two innings of the game, tying the game in the sixth with an RBI single and then a grand slam. 

In the seventh, Eureka scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly and Westminster was able to match the run in the bottom of the inning. 

Ian Cassidy took the loss, pitching seven innings and giving up six runs on eight hits. 

In game two, Mason Kirkweg took the mound and pitched a full 8.2 shutout innings. 

Westminster got on the board in the third inning after Trevor Rhoads took advantage of a rundown between first and second, taking off from third and scoring the first run of the game. 

A three-run fifth inning started with an RBI single from Zach Eisenreich to score Michael Skinner. Beeler added a second straight single, scoring Rhoads. Clavin followed Beeler, putting the ball in play to score Eisenreich from third. 

Devin Masek and Beeler added the final two runs in the eighth to bring the final score to 7-0. 

Kirkweg took the win in 8.2 innings, giving up just six hits and striking out three. 

The Blue Jays go on the road Saturday to face Principia in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
