JACKSON, Miss. - Westminster football fell in their season opener, 35-0, against the Millsaps Majors.

"The potential is there for this team," said Westminster Head Coach John Welty. "Our young offensive line played well, our young defensive line got in some quality reps, Kalyn Davis ran the ball exceptionally well, and Trent White also ran the ball well today and got some good looks." 

The defense opened the game by forcing a fumble to save a touchdown, forced by Jerrid Moore and recovered by Anthony Washington. 

The Westminster offense opened the season against a tough Millsaps defense with three straight first downs from a reception from Matt Quarles and rushes from White and Davis. The Blue JAys worked the offense to create a possession that lasted over five minutes.

The Majors scored at the end of the first quarter to go up 7-0 after the first 15 minutes. In the second quarter, they added three more touchdowns to go up 28-0 at the half. 

Defensively, Westminster recovered in the second half to allow just one more score over the next 30 minutes of play, finishing the game 35-0. 

White led the team in both passing and rushing. He went 7-19 with 81 yards, including a long 55-yard completion to freshman Ross Trittler. He added 70 yards rushing. 

Davis added 66 rushing yards on 10 attempts. Lucas Robinson added three receptions for 12 yards.

Jacob Money led the way in tackles for Westminster with 11, including seven solo. Along with Moore, Beau Thompson also added a forced fumble that was ultimately recovered by the Majors. 

The Blue Jays return home September 15 to open their season on the new turf field. They face Upper Midwest Athletic Conference oppenent Iowa Wesleyan at 1 p.m. 

"It's good to be playing at home and on a new field," said Welty. "Our fans and players should have a lot of adrenaline. Iowa Wesleyan is going to come ready and it will be important for us to stay focused on the moment."
