NEW ULM, Minn. - Westminster football fell 28-12 to Martin Luther football on the road while Trent White completed a season-high 247 passing yards.
The Blue Jays fall to 1-5 on the year and 1-4 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
"We had another tough day with missed oppotunities," said Westminster Head John Welty. "We went into halftime winning and we played great shutout defense for the half, so I'm happy with how we played in the opening half."
Westminster scored just three minutes into the game on a 59-yard run from Trent White. The kick was blocked to put the Blue Jays up 6-0.
The Blue Jay defense held strong for the remainder of the half to give Westminster the 6-0 advantage after two quarters.
Martin Luther finally got on the board in the third quarter, first on a long pass over the top of the defense and next on an 18-yard run from the Knights, putting Westminster down 14-6 after three quarters.
The Knights added another touchdown to start the fourth quarter on a short drive to go up 21-6.
The Blue Jays answered with just over six minutes to play in the game with a 28-yard pass from White to Lucas Robinson. The two-point conversion failed to make the score 21-12.
With three minutes left, the Knights added another touchdown to seal the Blue Jay fate.
"There's nothing we can do but continue to work hard and see what happens," said Welty.
White went 21-46 passing for a total of 247 yards. He also led the team in rushing with 27 yards on 19 attempts. Matt Quarles and Robinson were the top receivers for Westminster, with Quarles adding 123 yards on 10 catches and Robinson adding 108 yards on nine catches.
Clayton Bristol and Dakota Jakoubek led the team in tackles with 13 and 12, respectively. Ben Heimann and Jordan Shockley each added a forced fumble while Jerrid Moore recorded a pass breakup. Jackson Ringhausen grabbed the lone interception for Westminster.
The Blue Jays return home next Saturday, Oct. 20, for Homecoming to face Minnesota-Morris. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
"It means a lot to us to be back in our home park next weekend," said Welty. "We are a team of road warriors. We have traveled from Mississppi to Minnesota this season, and it's brought our young team closer as a group and given them a chance to be more in touch with what college football is all about. We are going to fight out way back next weekend for Homecoming, but after getting the chance to sleep in our own beds."
