John Welty joined the Westminster athletic staff as the defensive coordinator in 1998 and was named head coach at the end of the season.

Welty has led the Blue Jays to a 103-101 record. He holds three Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) South Division Championships, two UMAC Championships and a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Championship. He was named UMAC South Division Coach of the Year in 2003, 2004 and 2005, UMAC Co-Coach of the Year in 2004 and SLIAC Coach of the Year in 1999.

On Septemeber 21, 2019, Welty earned his 100th win at Westminster with a 35-7 victory over Iowa Wesleyan.

Prior to coming to Westminster, Coach Welty served as the head coach of his alma mater, Benedictine University(Ill.), for eight years. He also served as an assistant coach at North Central College and Simpson College.

Welty graduated from Benedictine in 1977.
