Blue Jays Outshot From Three-Point Line in 85-72 Loss to Nebraska Wesleyan

The Westminster men's basketball team was outshot from the three-point line 23-5 in Monday afternoon's 85-72 loss to non-conference Nebraska Wesleyan. The Westminster Blue Jays are now 5-9 on the season. 

The Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves jumped out to a 17-6 lead just 5:21 into the game. Sophomore Romo Tabb hit two consecutive jump shots to bring the game within seven, 17-10, but an 8-0 run by the Prairie Wolves followed to give them a 15-point advantage. Two three-pointers by senior Matt Murphy brought the Blue Jays within nine points, but a 9-0 run with three three-pointers gave the Prairie Wolves an 18-point lead with 6:41 to play. The Blue Jays faced their largest deficit of the game with 1:13 to go in the half, but senior Kellen Brondel hit a jump shot to send the game into halftime with the Blue Jays trailing 48-30. 

The Blue Jays held the Prairie Wolves to a 20-point advantage and a jumper by senior Brandon Drum sparked a 12-0 run to cut the score to 61-53. Over the next five minute span, the Prairie Wolves held a 12-4 run to jump back to a 16-point lead, 73-57. Freshman Collin Caywood was fouled on a three-pointer with 6:27 on the clock, sending him to the line. He drained all three, bringing the Blue Jays within 11, 75-64. The Prairie Wolves made their way to a 17-point lead with 2:42 to play, but freshman Casey McCollum went 2-for-2 from the foul line to bring the game to 85-70. Freshman Stu Hollandsworth made the final shot of the game, ending it with the final score of 85-72.

The Blue Jays shot 48.3 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from the three-point line. Sophomore Nick Carlos led the floor with 21 points while shooting 53.3 percent from the field. He also led the Blue Jays with six boards. Junior Zach Nelson led the team in assists and steals with three each. 

The Blue Jays return to conference play on Tuesday, January 18, as they travel to Elsah, Illinois to face Principia College.
