Matt Mitchell Earns Win 250 Over Fontbonne

St. LOUIS - Westminster Head Coach Matt Mitchell earns win number 250 in the 60-52 conference victory over Fontbonne.

The Blue Jays improve to 12-5 overall and 8-1 in the conference, maintaining first place.

"This was a very difficult road conference game today," said Mitchell. "I'm proud of our guys for finding a way to win when we didn't play our best."

Six straight points from Sean O'Brien led Westminster to a 10-4 run in the opening minutes of the game.

The Griffins took an 11-10 lead at the 14:32 mark, but two straight freethrows from O'Brien put Westminster back on top.

Fontbonne took their largest lead of the first half at nine points with 1:15 remaining.

An 8-0 run on O'Brien himself to open the second half put Westminster back within two points at 33-31.

Westminster caught up to Fontbonne late in the second half at the 5:32 mark with two made freethrows from Jimmy Villalobos to tie the game at 45. An 8-0 run from O'Brien and Villalobos combined gave Westminster their first lead of the half at 2:31 remaining in the game.

The Blue Jays made freethrows down the line to remain in the lead and keep the win to the end of the game for Mitchell's 250th.

"Give credit to Fontbonne for playing extremely hard on both ends," said Mitchell.

O'Brien led the team with 19 points and six rebounds. Villalobos added 11 points and four rebounds, while Tanner Cochran record 10 points and six rebounds.

Westminster continues SLIAC play Wednesday, Jan. 25 with a home game against Greenville at 8 p.m.
