FULTON, Mo. - Collin Caywood went 9-12 from behind the arc to score a career-high 29 points, leading Westminster over Fontbonne 79-60.
Westminster proves to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The win also marks the sixth win at home for Westminster, remaining undefeated in the Historic Gym for the 2017-18 season.
Caywood was just one three-pointer away from tying the gameday record for three-pointers made, ending the night with 29 points and six rebounds. On top of Caywood's hot night, Carter Wands tallied his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
"Carter played really well tonight, picking up the scoring in his brother's absence," said Westminster Head Coach Matt Mitchell. "Caywood took over for us in the second half. The guys did a great job of looking for him and getting him open shots."
The Blue Jays got out to a slow start offensively, but Tanner Cochran picked up the slack by scoring seven of the team's first nine points. After five minutes of play, Westminster was up 11-10.
Through the first 10 minutes of the game, Westminster was able to score 21 points and hold the Griffins to just 13. After a three-pointer from Steven Brandt at the 10:00 minute mark, Westminster went on a five-minute scoring drought which allowed Fontbonne to tie the game at 21 with under five minutes remaining.
Caywood made his first shot of the game to end the Blue Jay drought, and then hit back-to-back three-pointers to start hit steak and put Westminster back on top. Caywood ended the last five minutes with 11 points, including three made three-pointers, putting Westminster on top 34-28 after one half.
Caywood started the second half like he ended the first, with a three-pointer to put Westminster up by nine. Cochran, Cody Shaw, and Wands combined Westminster's next 10 points, but the Griffins stayed in the game and came as close as four points at the 13:52 mark. Despite more three-pointers from Caywood and Hayden Drace, Fontbonne continued to knock down shots and stay within a few possessions of the Blue Jays.
When the score came to 55-53 in favor of Westminster, the Blue Jays turned on an 18-0 run which included three three-pointers from Caywood and six points from Wands to make the score 73-53 with just over five minutes to play.
Fontbonne never came back within striking distance in the final minutes and Westminster closed out the game with a 19-point win.
Cochran also scored in double figures, adding 14 points on 6-11 shooting.
The Blue Jays travel to Iowa Wesleyan Saturday to continue conference play.
