Westminster Men's Basketball Falls to Webster, Breaks Conference Winning Streak

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster mens basketball snaps a three-game conference winning streak, falling 78-58 to Webster on the road.

The Blue Jays fall to 5-8 overall and 4-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

"Today was a tale of two halves," said Westminster Head Coach Matt Mitchell. "We had problems rebounding the ball in the first half, but in the second half, we cleaned that up but went cold shooting the ball."

Westminster opened the first half on a slow offensive start, but their strong defense allowed them to stick close to the Gorloks throughout the opening 10 minutes of the half. The Gorloks went on a short 6-0 run to give them the biggest lead of the game at 17-9 with 9:59 to play.

Collin Caywood hit a three-pointer to stifle the Webster run to pull back within four points of the lead. A three-pointer from Romo Tabb and a jumper from Tabb on the next play pulled the Blue Jays back within two points at the 3:45 mark, down 26-24.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Tabb and Kobe Wands gave the Blue Jays their first lead of the game at 30-26, but gave up the lead at the 1:01 mark on a Gorlok three-pointer.

Two Webster freethrows ended the half 33-30 in favor of the Gorloks.

Tabb opened the second half with five points to tie the game at 35 points each with 17:10 to play, but the Gorloks went on a 13-3 run over the next fivev minutes to take a double-digit lead. Stu Hollandsworth and Tabb hit shots to come back within five points at the 11:20 mark, but a 7-2 Gorloks run put them back up 55-45.

Westminster struggled in the last 10 minutes to stop the Webster runs, never coming back within single digits of the lead and eventually falling 78-58.

"Our guys played hard but just couldn't find rhythm offensively in the second half," said Mitchell. "Webster showed why they are currently in first place, they are a very solid team."

Tabb ledd all scorers with 24 points, adding six rebounds and two blocks.

Westminster remains on the road, traveling to Principia Tuesday to continue SLIAC play.
