Westminster Men's Basketball Drops Home Game to Fontbonne

FULTON, Mo. – The Westminster men's basketball team fell to 4-3 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a loss to Fontbonne on Wednesday night.

The Griffins opened the game with a layup and converted a free throw to complete the three-point play. Jaxon Althaus scored the first points for Westminster on dunk after making a steal and Omar Wright put the Blue Jays on top with two free throws. Fontbonne took the lead back with a layup before Ethan Thompson made a layup to put Westminster ahead 6-5. The Blue Jays remained in the lead until the Griffins tied the game at 14-14 on a tip-in with 13:43 to go. Following the tip-in the Blue Jays made three consecutive three-pointers to take a 23-16 lead and force a Fontbonne timeout. After the timeout the Griffins tied the game with a 7-0 run. The rest of the half saw the lead constantly changing, however neither team was to extend their lead to more than three points. The Blue Jays went into halftime trailing 40-38.

The second half feature more of the same with multiple lead changes and the score being separated by one or two possessions. That changed when the Griffins went on a 9-0 run to turn a one point lead into a 10-point lead with 4:34 left on the clock. The Blue Jays could not overcome this margin and were ultimately defeated 95-90.

Althaus (21 points) and Thompson (20 points) led the Blue Jays in scoring followed by Emil Spriggs with 16.

Makygh Galbreath added 10 points and led the Blue Jays with seven rebounds.

Next up the Blue Jays will face Spalding at home on Saturday afternoon.
