Late Goals Hurt Blue Jays in Season Opener Loss

The Westminster men's soccer team fell to Millikin University in their season opener Tuesday evening, 3-1. The Westminster Blue Jays begin their season with a 0-1 record.

The Blue Jays took an early 1-0 lead in the game with a penalty kick goal by senior Drake Trease in the sixth minute. The Blue Jays took another penalty kick in the 26th minute, but Millikin's goalkeeper grabbed the save. At the end of the first half, they had four shots on goal and nine shots. 

Millikin scored off a throw in just two minutes into the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Raul Belman Romero saved three balls in goal throughout the half, but in the 81st minute, Millikin put a ball past Belman Romero. Just three seconds later, Millikin snuck another ball in the net to take the 3-1 advantage, and the Blue Jays were unable to recover. 

The Blue Jays took five shots on goal with two coming from junior Tripp Sheehan. Belman Romero had eight saves in the loss. 

The men's team travel to Jacksonville, Illinois this weekend to play Lakeland College on Saturday, September 5, and Illniois College on Sunday, September 6.
