Blue Jays Start Conference Play with 7-1 Win over Fontbonne

The Westminster men's soccer team continues their winning streak with their seventh consecutive win and first conference win over Fontbonne University Saturday evening. The 7-1 victory brings the Blue Jays to 7-1 on the season and gives them a 1-0 start in conference.

Junior Eli Sherman headed the ball into the goal off a cross by junior Tripp Sheehan to take the 1-0 lead 16:27 into the game. Sophomore Dustin Seibolt scored the next goal after the ball was knocked in by a Fontbonne player.

In the 40th minute, senior Kevin Knobbe scored the third goal of the game off junior Peter Plakorus' assist. The Blue Jays scored two more goals less than a minute apart to take a 5-0 lead heading into halftime. First of the two goals was scored by junior Peter Gerber (assist Plakorus), and the second goal was by senior Kyle Collins (assist sophomore Mason VonderHaar).

Freshman goalkeeper Tanner Moesch took over in goal for junior keeper Raul Belman at the start of the second half. Collins scored the first goal of the half with a diving header from junior David Immanual's cross. In the 61st minute, Plakorus scored the seventh and final Blue Jay goal to give the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead.

In the 78th minute, Fontbonne scored to stop the Blue Jays from having a shutout win.

Belman (7-1) receives the win in goal. He played the first 45 minutes, allowed no goals and faced no shots. Moesch faced four shots and allowed one goal.  

 

The Blue Jays play again next Saturday, October 3, at Iowa Wesleyan University. First touch is at 1:00 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
