Freshmen Shine in Overtime Loss to North Central

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster men's soccer fell in its home opener to North Central in an overtime affair with the team's two goals coming from freshmen.

"We had a tough result here tonight," said Westminster Head Coach Adam Galla. "We played well for stretches of the match but were unable to pull it all together. We had two nice goals in the run of play and their goalkeeper made two great saves to keep them in it."

After a scoreless first half, the first player to score a goal for the Blue Jays in the 2017 season was freshman Brandon Rettke on an assist from Mauricio Mateo in the 50th minute.

The Cardinals answered with two goals back-to-back to secure the 2-1 lead after 70 minutes of play.

The equalizer for Westminster came from another freshman, Cade Rowlette, on an assist from Patrick Wisnewski.

The Blue Jay defense held on to send the game into overtime, but North Central scored in the 99th minute to secure the win.

"We give credit to North Central for grinding it out and coming up with the result," said Galla. "We'll refocus for a big game tomorrow against a great Knox side."

Westminster faces Knox Saturday at 4 p.m. at home.
