FULTON, Mo. - Westminster men's soccer held the Knox Prairie Fire to a tie after a double overtime battle.

The Blue Jays start the season 0-1-1 after the opening weekend. 

"It was really good competition this weekend," said Westminster Head Coach Adam Galla. "It had a big-time tournament type of feel. It was nice to see our freshmen step up in a big game and our seniors leading the way as well." 

The Blue Jays had a slow start to the game as Knox scored the first goal of the match in the 17th minute. Daniel Barone had the answer in the 33rd minute after blasting a ball from distance on a free kick from the middle of the field, soaring past the Prairie Fire keeper to put Westminster on the baord and tie the game at one apiece. 

Knox answered at the end of the first half with a goal, giving them the advantage 2-1 going into the halftime break. 

It was Austin Chandler who scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute from close range inside the box on a flick from Mauricio Mateo. 

Chandler's goal would eventually be the last of the game despite several close shots from both teams in overtime play. Raul Belman managed to save back-to-back chances late in overtime to keep Westminster in the game. 

Knox outshot the Blue Jays 23-15. Chandler and Barone led the way offensively for Westminster with three shots apiece, including two on goal. 

Belman made eight saves in his 65 minutes, and Connor Bandre made one save while keeping in the second half. 

"This was a good result tonight against a really good Knox side," said Galla. "We fought hard for 90-plus minutes and had a good chance to win it late."

Westminster travels to Grinnell Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
