Westminster Men's Soccer Suffers Last-Second Overtime Loss to Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - Westminster men's soccer took Wartburg to overtime in the team's season opener, but a Wartburg goal in the final seconds of the first overtime period downed the Blue Jays 3-2.

The Blue Jays got off to a strong start offensively, scoring their first two goals within the opening 13 minutes of the game. 

Patrick Wisnewski scored the first goal of the year in the fourth minute, finding the back of the net after a rebound inside the box. The second goal came in the 13th minute from Sam Heckart. After a throw-in from Barrett Smith, Heckart headed the ball in for the 2-0 lead. 

Westminster held Wartburg scoreless for the remainder of the first half, but Wartburg opened up the second half with a goal in the 48th minute on an open Blue Jay net. Wartburg tied the game under four minutes later.

Both teams remained scoreless, tied at two goals apiece, for the rest of regulation. 

After a scoreless 9 minutes, 56 seconds of overtime, Wartburg netted the game winner on a shot from inside the box as the seconds counted down, downing Westminster with the golden goal. 

Wartburg outshot the Blue Jays 22-8, with Wisnewski and Heckart leading the way with three shots apiece. 

Connor Bandre' played all 100 minutes in goal, allowing three goals and making 11 saves.
