Blue Jays Split with Rhodes

The Westminster softball team split with Rhodes College on Tuesday afternoon. The Westminster Blue Jays won game one 7-4, but dropped game two in five innings. The split brings them to 7-5 on the season.

The Rhodes Lynx scored in the top of the first inning of game one with a RBI double, but in the bottom of the second, the Blue Jays picked up two runs. With bases loaded, junior Alyssa Johnson hit a sacrifice fly out to right field, bringing in freshman Whitney Mitchhart. The second run came from freshman Caty Barrett's RBI single to left field to score freshman Kaylin Calton

Rhodes tied the game at 2-2 in the third and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning, but a huge sixth inning put the Blue Jays up 7-3. With one out, senior Shannon Perrigo singled to left field. Calton and Johnson walked, loading the bases for sophomore Kim Morrison. Morrison hit a RBI single to score Perrigo, and Barrett came up to the plate and hit a three RBI double to center field to take a 6-3 lead. The final run scored was off Baker's RBI single.

Rhodes put up one run in the top of the seventh, but two ground outs to junior Brittany Hodge at short stop ended the game with a 7-4 win.

The Blue Jays finished with seven hits. Barrett went 2-for-3 with four RBI. 

Perrigo (4-1) was credited with the win in the circle. She pitched the final two innings. Junior Alyson Hahn pitched the first five innings, faced 25 batters and struck out four.

In game two, Rhodes took a 6-0 lead after two innings of play. They added two more runs in the third inning before the Blue Jays scored on a sacrifice fly out by freshman Taylor Sechler

Rhodes scored 12 more runs over the fourth and fifth innings to short game the Blue Jays 20-1. 

Freshman Maddie Coffin (0-2) was credited with the loss. She pitched two innings and faced 24 batters. 

The Blue Jays next see the field on their spring break trip in San Diego, Calif. Their first game of the trip is a doubleheader versus Redlands on Monday, March 28 starting at 4:00 pm CST.
