Softball Drops Two to Redlands on Spring Break Trip

The Westminster softball team opened their spring break trip in southern California with two losses to the University of Redlands. They Westminster Blue Jays lost game one with a walk-off home run, 12-10. They were short-gamed in game two, 11-0. They are currently 7-7 on the season.

The Blue Jays led off game one with three runs scored after loading the bases with no outs. In the four hole, junior Erica Burney came up to the plate and hit a two RBI double to left center, bringing in junior Anne Baker and sophomore Leah Holthaus. With two outs, junior Alyssa Johnson hit a RBI single through the right side to score sophomore Amber Tepen.

The Redlands Bulldogs scored two in the bottom of the inning off a single to center field, but the Blue Jays put up three more in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Freshman Taylor Sechler scored on a passed ball, and Tepen followed with a two run home run over the left field fence. Redlands scored two in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 6-4. 

In the top of the fifth, junior Brittany Hodge hit a RBI single over second base to score Johnson, but the Bulldogs completed a six-run inning in the sixth inning to take a 10-7 lead over the Blue Jays heading into the seventh inning. 

In the top of the seventh, the Blue Jays scored three runs to tie up the game. Junior Alyson Hahn scored freshman Kaylin Calton off an error. Hodge reached on a fielder's choice, but brought in frehman Caty Barrett. With bases loaded, Tepen hit a RBI single to left field to score Johnson and tie the game at 10-10. The inning came to a close on a flyout.

The Bulldogs put one runner on with a single, and a walk-off home run ended the game with a 12-10 loss.

The Blue Jays finished with 13 hits and no errors. Tepen went 3-for-5 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. 

Freshman Maddie Coffin was credited with the loss in the circle.

The Bulldogs short-gamed the Blue Jays in game two, 11-0. Senior Shannon Perrigo pitched the complete game. 

The Blue Jays play NAIA San Diego Christian College on Tuesday, March 29. The doubleheader starts at 1:00 pm PDT or 11:00 am CST.
