Softball Ends Spring Break Trip with 7-6 Loss to Pomona-Pitzer

The Westminster softball team ended their California spring break trip with a 7-6 loss to Pomona-Pitzer. The Westminster Blue Jays return home with a 7-10 overall record.

The Blue Jays led off the game with a two run home run by junior Erica Burney. Pomona-Pitzer scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first to bring the score to 2-1, but the Blue Jays added three more runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead. With two outs and bases loaded, the Pomona-Pitzer pitcher walked in a run. Sophomore Danielle Hendricks then hit a RBI single to left field, bringing in Burney. Junior Kat Cooper also scored on the play off an error by the left fielder. 

In the bottom of the inning, Pomona-Pitzer scored an unearned run off a wild pitch. They added five more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. 

The Blue Jays attempted to rally in the seventh inning to extend their chances of winning the game. With two outs, junior Alyson Hahn hit sacrifice fly out to center field and freshman Maddie Coffin crossed the plate. Pomona-Pitzer struck out the final batter, ending the game with a 7-6 loss.

The Blue Jay offense outhit Pomona-Pitzer 10-9. Four batters finished with two hits each, and Burney went 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Shannon Perrigo (4-4) was credited with the loss in the circle. She pitched one inning and faced nine batters. Hahn pitched the other five innings and faced 23 batters.   

The Blue Jays begin conference play on Saturday, April 2, with a doubleheader at Eureka College. First pitch is at 12:00 pm.
