FULTON, Mo. - Westminster softball earned two more St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wins with a sweep of MacMurray.
The Blue Jays improve to 8-12 overall and 8-2 in the SLIAC.
"We struggled in the first game with out focus on defense, but it was great to see the team pick themselves up in the second game and recover our defense," said Westminster Head Coach Sara Stafford. "Softball is a game of failure and how you recover from it. I was happy to see us stay up and make the next play."
Game one was a high-scoring affair for both sqauds, with the Highlanders getting on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the first inning.
Westminster answered in the bottom of the inning with another RBI from the hot bat of Madison Washington, driving in two runs with a single to center to take the 2-1 lead. Hannah Schroeder added two more runs in the second for a 4-1 Blue Jay lead.
Not to be outdone, the Highlanders came back in the third for two more runs to pull back within one run of the lead, but Westminster added a dominant third inning at the plate with home runs from both Lauren Huskey, a two-run shot, and Mikala Guthrie, a solo shot, to take a 7-3 lead. Both home runs were the first collegiate bombs for the two freshmen.
MacMurray added a run in the fourth inning to cut the lead back to 7-4, but Westminster added four runs in the fifth to again pull ahead, 11-4, including a two-run homer from Taylor White.
The Highlanders came back in the sixth for three runs. Westminster quickly shut down the run with a five run sixth inning, including a grand slam from Schroeder to increase her total to six RBI on the game.
Elizabeth Davis took the win on the mound after pitching in relief for Katie Price.
In game two, Westminster earned an 8-0 shutout win in five innings. In the first Westminster added three runs which included RBI from Guthrie and Mackenzie Myers, increasing to a 4-0 lead in the second when White scored on a wild pitch.
A two-run third inning which included RBI form Madison Ingram and White increased the lead to 6-0. Guthrie and Hannah Hirschvogel added the final two RBI to end the game in five innings and give Westminster the win.
Ingram took the win on the mound, pitching a one-hitter and a five-inning shutout.
"These ladies have a lot of fight, and we are going to keep getting better from here," said Stafford.
The Blue Jays travel to Blackburn Saturday for a doubleheader matchup. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
