MEMPHIS - Westminster women's basketball earned its first win of the season with a 70-48 score over Rhodes.

The Blue Jays improve to 1-3 on the year.

"We took a solid step forward tonight," said Westminster Head Coach Tracey Braden. "Rhodes is a great program with good athletes who are well-disciplined. They had four posts who we knew would test us."

After a three-pointer from the Lynx to open the game, the Blue Jays went on a 7-0 run and never looked back.

Mirrakohl Johnson tallied seven of the team's 17 points in the first quarter to take a 17-14 lead after 10 minutes.

"Our posts really stepped up tonight," said Braden. "They battled on the boards all night, and 19 offensive boards is huge for us."

The Blue Jays opened up the second quarter on a 12-2 run to go up 29-16. Westminster outscored the Lynx 16-7 in the second quarter to extend their lead to 33-21 at the half.

A three-point play completed by Johnson opened up the second half to make the Westminster lead 15. Another strong scoring effort in the third quarter from Westminster gave the Blue Jays a 20-point lead going into the final quarter.

Andrea Zalis hit five of her 11 points in the fourth quarter to ensure the Blue Jay win at 70-48.

Four Blue Jays ended the game in double figures including Zalis with 11, Johnson with 12, Ali Perry with 13, and Brooke Stauffer with 14 off the bench to lead the team. Johnson led the team in rebounds with nine. All nine Blue Jays who entered the game were able to score.

"I'm just so proud of this team," said Braden. "Everyone contributed tonight. The bench was so invested in this game by constantly calling out defensive sets and how much time was on the clock on the offensive end."

Westminster stays in Memphis to face Dallas Sunday at 4 p.m. CT.
