CEDAR RAPIDS, Ia. - Westminster women's basketball fell to Coe in a nonconference road match-up 78-64.
The Blue Jays fall to 5-4 overall with the loss.
"Coe jumped all over us and really did whatever they wanted offensively in the first half," said Westminster Head Coach James Arnold. "It was really too much for us to overcome in the long run."
The Kohawks jumped out to a quick lead in the opening minutes of the game, leading 9-3 after the first few minutes. The Blue Jays played with Coe, trailing just 13-10 after the first six minutes.
A 7-2 run from Coe to end the quarter put Westminster behind 20-12 after 10 minutes.
A 5-0 run to start the second quarter on three points from Mirrakohl Johnson put Westminster back within three, but back-to-back three-pointers from the Kohawks gave them back the seven-point lead. Johnson again added three points to keep the Blue Jays in the battle, but Coe went on a 6-0 run to increase their lead to double-digits and force Westminster to call a timeout. The Blue Jays ended the hall trailing 39-25.
Coe continued their offensive explosion in the third quarter by opening the half with an 8-0 run. Kendahl Adams ended the Blue Jay drought with a layup at the 8:16 mark. Despite six points from Adams in the third quarter and the best scoring quarter so far in the game for Westminster, Coe was able to put up 27 points to continue to increase their lead.
Westminster had its best quarter of the game in the final 10 minutes, scoring 21 points which included 10 points from Adams. The Blue Jays held Coe to just 12 points in the quarter, ending the game with a final score of 78-64.
"Winning on the road is so tough, especially against talented teams, and you have to take advantage of every opportunity and that includes the freethrow line," said Arnold. His team went 21-40 from the freethrow line.
Adams led the Blue Jays with 19 points. Johnson added 14 points while Grace Archambault added 10.
The Blue Jays travel to Boulder, Colorado Dec. 21 to face Pac-12 opponent Colorado for an exhibition contest.
