Greenville Tops Westminster Women's Soccer

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster women's soccer fought a close battle with Greenville but ultimately fell 2-1.

Westminster falls to 4-5 with the loss and 1-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The first half was a defensive battle from both teams, with the Blue Jays controlling the pace of play and taking most of the possession. The Panthers were able to sneak in a goal in the 14th minute on a cross in front of the goal.

The Blue Jays held Greenville to the lone goal in the first half, but were not able to convert their offensive attack into a goal.

Greenville scored again in the 64th minute on a through ball which led to a one-on-one attack on the Blue Jay goalkeeper and put the Panthers up 2-0.

Westminster received a penalty in the box in the 69th minute, resulting in a penalty kick for Cara Wilfong. The freshman easily netted the ball and gave Westminster a new life heading into the final 20 minutes of the match.

The Blue Jays made several strong attacks in the final minutes, including a breakaway from Paige Townsend in which she sailed a hard hit ball just wide to hit off the post in the final minutes.

Westminster outshot the Panthers 15-9, with Townsend taking five of those shots.

The Blue Jays continue their homestand with a match against MacMurray Saturday at 3 p.m.
