Westminster Women's Soccer Plays Cornell to Scoreless Tie

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Westminster women's soccer completed road nonconference play with a scoreless tie at Cornell.

Westminster moves to 3-2-1 on the year.

"We were able to apply a good amount of pressure on their defense," said Westminster Head Coach Wendy Sanchez. "At times we were a little impatient and that is what caused us to not be able to execute the final pass or shot."

The offense was stagnant for both teams in the first half with a combined seven shots, but picked up in the second half. The Westminster defense saw 10 shots from Cornell is the second 45 minutes of play, with Sarah Cradick making six saves.

"Defensively we dealt with their pressure well," said Sanchez. "Cornell was hungry for a goal and we managed to do just enough to keep them from scoring. This was a challenging road game and we did well to not let it be a negative result."

The Blue Jays made up most of the offense in overtime, recording four of the five shots, but couldn't connect with the back of the net.

Cara Wilfong provided a majority of the offense for Westminster, making three shots, including two on goal.

Cradick played all 110 minutes in goal, making eight saves to earn the shutout.

"Moving forward, today's game especially will help us prepare for the tough road games where the opposition's main tactic is to frustrate our attack," said Sanchez.

Westminster plays its final nonconference game at home Wednesday against Millikin at 7 p.m.
