ST. LOUIS - Westminster women's soccer fought a tough battle against Fontbonne, forcing overtime after a scoreless 90 minutes, but eventually fell 1-0.
The Blue Jays fall to 8-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
"The team fought hard and showed resilience and we left it all on the field," said Westminster Head Coach Wendy Sanchez. "The outcome is only going to further prepare and motivate us."
The Griffins outshot Westminster in both halves, forcing the Blue Jay defense to step up against the Fontbonne attack.
While Westminster only recorded seven shots in the match, four of them were on goal as the Blue Jays maximized their chances to score.
After forcing overtime, holding the Griffins scoreless, a foul in the box in the 93rd minute gave Fontbonne a penalty kick to win the match.
Sarah Craddick saw eight shots, making seven saves in the loss. Kate Ponder, Katherine Hammond, Cara Wilfong, and Gracie Koonce each added a shot on goal for Westminster.
The Blue Jays stay on the road, facing Greenville Saturday at 4 p.m.
"We have three conference games left and we need to take them one at a time," said Sanchez.
