Westminster Falls to Greenville on Late Second-Half Goal

10/12/2024 Greenville, IL- The Westminster College women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Greenville University on Saturday afternoon in Greenville, Illinois. The defeat moves the Blue Jays to 4-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).

The match began with both teams exhibiting strong defensive organization, limiting clear-cut opportunities. Westminster's backline effectively thwarted Greenville's early advances. Goalkeeper Reagan Chigas was called into action multiple times, making four crucial saves in the first half to keep the Panthers at bay.

Offensively, the Blue Jays looked to their forwards to break through Greenville's defense. Destynee Orf managed to get a shot on goal in the 22nd minute, forcing a save from Greenville's goalkeeper. Midfielder Brooke Yanskey also tested the goalie with a well-placed shot in the 35th minute, but the first half concluded in a 0-0 stalemate.

Coming out of halftime, both teams increased their offensive pressure. Westminster continued to push forward, with Molly Angell and Claire Sanders making notable attempts to penetrate the Panthers' defense.

Greenville responded with a series of attacks, but Westminster's defense remained solid. Reagan Chigas continued to add to her save count, once again denying Greenville's attempts.

As the clock wound down, it seemed the match was destined to end in a draw. However, in the 88th minute, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Jays will seek to regroup and refocus as they prepare for their next conference match. The loss emphasizes the importance of capitalizing on scoring opportunities and maintaining concentration until the final whistle.

The Blue Jays will return home to Kent & Judith Mueller Stadium to face their next opponent, Lyon College, on October 17th. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30pm.
