Women's Tennis to Third Place Match after Day One Split

The Westminster women's tennis team split on day one of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Tournament. The Blue Jays entered the tournament as the no. three seed and faced no. six Fontbonne. The Blue Jays swept Fontbonne, 5-0, sending them to play no. two Principia. The Blue Jays lost, 5-0, sending them to the third place match. 

The Blue Jays will battle with no. four Greenville in the third place match. It will take place at Kings Point in Belleville, Ill. on Saturday, April 30, at 11:30 am. 

The Blue Jays possessed a 3-0 lead over Fontbonne after doubles play. The no. one duo, freshman Sydney Attebery and senior Jessica Klutts, defeated their opponent, 8-4. The no. two duo comprised of sophomore Payton Beeler and junior Ellen Woolsey won 8-2, and the no. threes Laura duo, junior Laura Kelly and senior Laura Wiltshire, won 8-1. 

Kelly and Wiltshire won the first two points needed to win the match in the no. five and six singles, respectively. Kelly defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-0, and Wiltshire won 6-1, 6-0. 

In the match versus no. two Principia, the Blue Jays dropped the three doubles competitions with an 8-3 score in the no. one spot and two 8-1 scores in the no. two and three spots. 

Principia won their two remaining points needed in the no. one and two singles spots. Attebery was defeated in the no. one spot, 6-0, 6-0. Klutts dropped the no. two spot, 6-0, 6-2.
