Westminster Volleyball Handles Griffins

ST. LOUIS - Westminster volleyball won its fifth straight match and fourth straight in conference play by defeating Fontbonne 3-1.

The Blue Jays move to 5-1 on the year and 4-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. 

In the first set, Westminster got off to a slow start, falling behind after two points, but quickly recovered to score three straight points. After two more ties, Westminster found a way to add five straight points to make the score 11-6, and never looked back. They led by as many as nine in the set, taking the win 25-17. 

The Griffins regrouped to open the second set strong, going up 7-3 in the first 10 points. The Griffins maintained an 11-point lead late in the set, but Westminster rallied to score four straight points to attempt a comeback. Fontbonne held on to win 25-17, tying the match 1-1. 

The third set was the most competitive of the match, eventually going into extra points. Fontbonne led by six points to open the match, but the Blue Jays came storming back to score five straight points and take a 16-15 lead. The rest of the match was back-and-forth, finally ending on a kill from Allie Kennebeck to take the 28-26 win. 

The Blue Jays continued their command of the match in the fourth and final set. After starting the set off down, they came back to take the 6-5 and never trailed after that point. Two errors from Fontbonne ended the match 25-17, giving the Blue Jays the 3-1 win in the match. 

Teresa Becker and Natalie Needy led the offense with 12 kills apiece. Jill Reando recorded 32 assists, while three Blue Jays were in double-digit figures for digs including Bridget Ringwald (18), Becker (10), and Micha Frasher (10). 

Westminster travels to Galesburg, Illinois, Saturday for a tournament hosted by Knox College.
