Heading into the Wednesday night, Westminster and Greenville men's soccer were tied for first with a 7-0 record in conference play, looking to claim the top spot. The Westminster Blue Jays claimed first place with a 5-0 shutout over Greenville to remain undefeated in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play with an 8-0 record. They move their overall record to 14-2 with one game remaining in regular season.
The Blue Jays made their mark in the record books by winning their 14th game of the season, breaking the previous held record of 13 wins in 2013. The team also put their name in the record books with the broken record of goals scored in a season. The Blue Jays needed just one goal heading into tonight's match to break the 2007 record of 67 goals.
Sophomore Austin Chandler scored the first goal of the game, breakimg the season goals record, just 5:20 in with a shot to the low corner of the net. Junior Tripp Sheehan assisted the goal.
Sophomore Blake Hausman scored just over two minutes later with the cross from junior Eli Sherman.
The remaining 37 minutes of the first half were scoreless, sending the Blue Jays into halfime with a 2-0 lead.
Sheehan scored the first goal of the second half with a header into the middle of the goal off junior Drew Cook's cross. Ten minutes later, freshman Patrick Bromstedt headed the ball in with sophomore Tanner Touslee's assist.
With just 1:10 left in the game, freshman Danny Chicas put the ball in the net with Touslee's cross to give the Blue Jays their fifth goal.
The Blue Jays outshot Greenville 24-8 and had nine more shots on goal than the Panthers (12-3).
Goalkeeper Raul Belman (14-2) was credited with the win in goal. He played just 20:33 before freshman keeper Tanner Moesch took over. Moesch recorded three saves in his 70 minutes in goal.
The Blue Jays close out the 2015 regular season on Saturday, October 31 with a home match versus Spalding. The game will be played at Battle High School in Columbia, Mo. at 1:00 pm. The team will honor the three seniors immediately following their game (approximately 2:45 pm).
