Greenville, IL, 10/20/21 – The first half of the Westminster College men's soccer matchup with the Greenville University Panthers could not have gone much worse than it did. The Blue Jays found themselves down 4-0 at the half. The Blue Jays would rally and outscore their hosts 3-1 in the second half but their comeback would run out of gas in a 5-3 road loss to the Panthers. The loss dropped the Blue Jays record to 3-10-2 overall and 3-7-1 in SLIAC play. The Panthers improved to 9-7-1 and 7-3-1 n SLIAC play.
The Panthers would score in the 27th, 29th, 32nd and 42nd minutes of the first half. The Jays looked dead in the water. Early in the second half the Blue Jays would get a spark in the form of a Bakuru Dieudone (Columbia, MO / Rock Bridge) pass to Andrew Sprengel (Winfield, MO / Winfield) who scored to cut the lead to 4-1 in the 49th minute with his third goal of the year. The Panthers would get that goal back in the 70th minute to lead 5-1. Freddy Nene (Columbia, MO / Rock Bridge) would score his fourth goal of the season in the 73rd minute off of an assist from freshman Wyatt Hammond (Columbia, MO / Hickman) to make it 5-2. In the 82nd minute Mustekbel Shoune scored his fourth goal of the season off of a Niklas Olsson (Kansas City, MO / Liberty) assist to make it 5-3. The Blue Jays would get another chance on a corner kick but could not convert and they would run out of time falling 5-3.
Westminster goalkeeper Chris Lannom (Forney, Tx. / Forney) started and played the first 45 minutes as he would give up four goals and record two saves. Freshman goalkeeper Toby Hughes (Jefferson City, MO / Jefferson City) played the second half making no saves and allowing one goal.
The Panthers outshot the Blue Jays 17-15 overall and 7-6 in shots on goal. Westminster took nine corner kicks to Greenville's four. The Blue Jays were whistled for nine fouls compared to the Panthers seven.
The Blue Jays will be back on the road on Saturday October 23rd when they will travel to Louisville, KY to take on the Spalding University Golden Eagles in a 1:00 p.m. central time kick off.
