Blue Jays Swept By Golden Eagles In Louisville  

3/30/2024 Louisville, Ky- The Westminster College baseball team traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to face off against the Spalding University Golden Eagles in their first road conference series of the season. The Blue Jays would fall 5-1 in game 1 and 7-1 in game 2. Spalding improves to 6-0 in the SLIAC and 14-9 overall on the season. Westminster drops to 2-4 in the conference and 9-16 on the year.  

Game 1: Box Score 

  • Spalding took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Blue Jays answered with a run in the top of the 4th inning after Payton Whitehead hit a solo home run to center field to tie the game.  

  • The Golden Eagles scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to go on top 5-1.  

  • Westminster could not the bats going, recording only 2 hits from the 4th inning on.  

  • Derek Archer started on the mound for the Blue Jays, and he went 4 innings, gave up 5 runs on 10 hits and struck out 5 batters.  

  • The Blue Jays would threaten in the top of the 9th but would leave 2 runners on base as they fell 5-1.

Payton Whitehead: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR  

Trent Rueckert: 1-2, 1 BB, 1 2B  

Matt Lukins: 1-4  

Game 2: Box Score  

  • After 2 scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles would score in 4 of the last 6 innings, taking a 7-0 lead.  

  • The Blue Jays would get on the board in the top of the 8th inning after Donovan Bohler hit a lead off single up the middle. Troy Romero would follow him with a single to right field to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Austin Mayton then hit a 2-out RBI single up the middle to score Bohler.  

  • Unfortunately for Westminster, 3 of their 5 hits in the game came in the top of the 8th inning as their offense was shut down by the Spalding pitching staff.  

  • Bode Gebbink started game 2 for the Jays. He pitched 4 innings and a third, giving up 6 runs on 8 hits and striking out 5 batters.

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Tuesday, April 2nd when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri for a non-conference game against Harris-Stowe State University. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
