Blue Jays Fall To Griffins In Season Finale  
 
Fulton, Mo 4/27/2024- The Westminster College softball team hosted the Fontbonne University Griffins in the final game of the season. The Griffins would narrowly edge out the Blue Jays in a pitchers' duel in game 1, winning 2-1. They would defeat the Blue Jays 15-2 in game 2. Fontbonne moves to 18-17 on the season and 12-2 in the SLIAC, sitting in 1st place. Westminster's season ends with a 6-32 record and 2-14 in the SLIAC.  

Game One: Box Score 

  • Game one was a pitchers' duel with both teams' starters throwing complete games. Payton Dudenhoeffer would give up 2 runs on 4 hits for the Blue Jays in her 8th complete game of the year.  

  • They would go 4 scoreless innings before the Blue Jays broke through in the bottom of the 5th. Maddie Marreo would reach on an error by the Griffins' third baseman. Emily Esquivel singled to center field to put runners on 2nd and 1st with no outs in the inning. Ellie Bedsworth would drive in Marrero on a 2-out single to center field to put the Blue Jays on top 1-0.  

  • The Griffins would hit a 2-run home run in the top of the 6th inning to go up 2-1 and would hold on to win the game with the 2-1 final score.

Ellie Bedsworth: 1-4, 1 RBI  

Kendall Weber: 3-3  

Emily Esquivel: 1-3, 1 BB  

Game Two: Box Score  

  • Ellie Bedsworth started game two with a bang, launching a 2-run home run to center field, her 2nd of the season, and put the Blue Jays on top 2-0 early on.  

  • The Griffins would score 2 runs in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, 4 in the 5th, and 7 in the 7th to win the game 15-2.  

  • Mia Turner got the start for the Blue Jays, recording 4 innings, giving up 4 runs on 10 hits, and striking out one. Ellie Bedsworth came in to relieve Turner and went one inning and a third, giving up 4 runs on 3 hits. Payton Dudenhoeffer would come in to pitch the final inning, giving up 7 runs on 6 hits.
