Blue Jays Lose Second Straight Game in Final Seconds

Fulton, Mo., March 12, 2021 – The Westminster College Blue Jays men's basketball team played a hard-fought game against the visiting Blackburn College Beavers Friday night in Historic Gym.  For the second game in a row, the Blue Jays were undone by a three-point shot in the games final seconds and lost 62-61.

The heartbreaking loss drops the Blue Jays to 1-4 overall and 1-4 in the SLIAC.  Clinging to a 61-59 lead the Blue Jays needed one more stop to secure the win.  Blackburn drove the ball to the basket and a Blue Jay help side defender rotated to help. The Blackburn ball handler kicked the ball out and despite a valiant effort to rotate by the Blue Jays, the Blackburn player made an extra pass to find the open man David Lopez who hit the corner three for the win.

The Blue Jays were led by Jaxon Althaus with 15 points and six rebounds. Ethan Thompson knocked down four three-point shots on the way to 12 points.  Landon Harrison led the Blue Jays with five assists and six rebounds.

The Blue Jays will be back in action in a week when they take on the Fontbonne University Griffins in St. Louis next Friday.  The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
