Blue Jays Drop to D2 Missouri S&T, 76-57

The Westminster women's basketball team dropped to Division II Missouri S&T Tuesday evening, 76-57. The loss snapped the Westminster Blue Jay's four-game winning streak, bringing them to 4-2 on the season. 

The Blue Jays jumped out to a 6-0 lead to begin the game with three's coming from senior Sadie Theroff and junior Andrea Zalis. They increased their lead to 8-3 with two free throws by junior Krista Armontrout just 2:35 into the game. The Missouri S&T Miners brought the game within one with a five-point run, 13-12, and a 6-0 run for the Miners gave them a five-point lead to close out the first quarter, 18-13. 

Five minutes into the second quarter, freshman Mirrakohl Johnson put in a layup to knot the game at 25-25, but a 10-1 Miner run gave them a nine-point advantage with 1:19 left in the half. With :07 on the clock, Theroff grabbed a steal and went for the fast break. She was fouled on the way up, sending her to the line. She went 2-2 from the foul line, bringing the game within seven heading into halftime, 37-30. 

Armontrout went 2-2 from the foul line just 50 seconds into the second half to bring the game within five, 37-32, but the Miners struck an 8-0 run over four minutes to take a 45-32 lead. Senior Kasey Gatson put in a jumper to stop the Miner run, and she hit another three to bring the game within 10 with 3:49 to go in the third quarter, 47-37. The Miners closed out the quarter with an 11-2 run to hold a 58-39 lead. 

The Miners pulled out to a 24-point lead just two minutes into the final quarter. The Blue Jays and Miners each scored 18 points in the fourth, bringing the end score to 76-57, Missouri S&T.

Armontrout recorded 13 points to lead the Blue Jay offense. She went 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Gatson added 12 points to the game. Senior Mackenzie Haddox pulled down five defensive boards and led the team with six total. 

The Blue Jays return back home for their third conference game on Saturday, December 12, versus Iowa Wesleyan University. Tip-off is at 4:00 pm.
