Mayberry, Tessman Earn First Wins for Westminster Wrestling

DECATUR, Ill. - Christian Mayberry and Hunter Tessman each notched wins in the Millikin Open, tallying the first wins in the new era of Westminster men's wrestling.

"With having a first year program with just  freshman, we're probably not even supposed to get a win," said Head Coach Tony Eierman. "All of these programs have upper classmen and a lot more experience, but all of our guys came out and competed. They give us their heart and soul, and Mike (Head Coach) and I couldn't be happier."

Tessman earned the top finish for the squad with a second-place finish in in the open 184.

"Hunter competed in a weight class up, and barely lost the championship match," said Eierman.

After getting a bye in his first round, Tessman defeated Tanner Zimmerman of Central College by a fall. He then went on to tally two more wins again Griffin Meeks of Millikin and Wayne Sommerlot of Central before falling in the championship to Christos Giatras in a 10-9 decision. Giatras was an All-American a season ago.

Mayberry earned a bye in his first round before defeating Michael Lobianco of Triton College before falling to Jared Foiles of Central.

"Christian competed against some really quality opponents here today," said Eierman.

Westminster will travel to Mequon, Wisconsin, November 18 for the Concordia Open.

"We wanted to see where they were at for the season and gage where we are today," said Eierman. "We couldn't be happier with their performance today. Every one of them wrestled well and didn't quit, they showed us what we've been working on."
