Blue Jays Fall To Top Team In SLIAC

1/24/2024 Greenville, IL- The Westminster College men's basketball team wrapped up their three-game road stint against the Greenville University Panthers. Turnovers and the Panthers' high-octane offense were too much for the Blue Jays to overcome as Greenville would win the game 138-98. The Panthers improved to 13-5 on the season and 9-2 in the SLIAC. The Blue Jays fell to 3-15 on the season and 3-8 in the SLIAC. 

Greenville shot out to an 11-0 lead to start the game and led the game buzzer to buzzer. The Blue Jays would call timeout to regroup. After the timeout, they would come back and cut the Panthers' lead to four at 18-14 with 15:48 left in the first half. The Blue Jays would cut it to two points, 22-20 after Lee Verslues made a layup at the 12:33 mark. Greenville would run the lead back up to 11 after hitting a three to make it 41-30. The Panthers would continue to extend their lead and went into halftime up 73-52. 

The game would get away from the Blue Jays as 34 turnovers led to a 138-98 victory for the Panthers. Greenville made 12 threes in the game with their unique style of play. The Blue Jays were out-rebounded 50-41. One bright spot for Westminster is they went 20-23 from the free-throw line. 

Walker Gohring led the Blue Jays with 18 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Brennan Jeffries had 14 points and went 4 of 5 from the line. Ben Eberlin had 13 points and 3 rebounds. Aaron Poage and Jacob Becker had 12 points off the bench. 

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Saturday, January 27th for the annual Coaches vs Cancer game. They will host Blackburn College at 3:00 PM inside the Historic Gym.
