Matheney Finishes Third; Westminster Men's Golf Sixth at McNaughton Invite

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Westminster men's golf recorded a sixth-place finish at the Illinois College McNaughton Invite Monday, including a third-place finish from Kurt Matheney to lead the Blue Jays.

"I was really pleased with the way our guys competed as a team and within their individual rounds," said Westminster Head Coach Tom O'Donnell.

Matheney shot a 74, a career-low round for the Blue Jay and was the top NCAA Division III finisher in the event. The score of 74 is the lowest round for a Westminster golfer since at least 2013.

"Kurt puts in as much work on his game as anybody on the team so I was thrilled to see that work result in a special round," said O'Donnell.

As a team, Westminster finished sixth out of nine teams, ahead of conference opponent MacMurray and just one stroke behind Blackburn.

Zane West-Derby also shot below an 80 at 79, finishing 21st.

Rounding out the final three for the Blue Jays was Aubrey Nelson (84), Corey Schmidt (86), and Andrew Bennett (87).

The Blue Jays go on the road Tuesday to compete in the Iowa Wesleyan Tiger Classic, the last competition before the SLIAC Championship April 22-23 at Weaver Ridge Golf Course in Peoria.
