Blue Jays Split On The Final Day Of Their Spring Trip

Orlando, FL 3/24/2024- The Westminster College softball team traveled to Orlando, Florida to compete in "THE Spring Games". The Blue Jays would play six games total over 4 days, defeating Knox College 9-1 in the final game of the trip. Westminster would play a total of 4 regionally ranked teams. On Thursday, the Blue Jays fell 9-1 to Endicott College and 8-3 to Amherst College. On Saturday, Westminster lost 11-1 to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and 7-0 to Carleton College. The Blue Jays would lose 7-0 to Tufts University and then in the final game defeated Knox College 9-1 to end the tournament on a high note and head into the start of the conference season next weekend. Westminster moves to 4-18 on the season.  

Vs Endicott:Box Score  

  • The Blue Jays would take an early 1-0 lead after scoring off a Kelsey Logan single to left field with runners on the corners in the top of the 2nd.  

  • Westminster could not capitalize on their scoring opportunities, leaving 5 runners total on base.  

  • Endicott would put up 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning and score again in the bottom of the 5th inning to win the game 9-1.

Vs Amherst:Box Score 

  • Amherst started the game swinging, put up 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning.  

  • The Blue Jays chipped away at the lead, scoring 1 run in the bottom of the 5th after a single from Emily Esquivel scored Kendall Weber. Westminster would plate 2 more runs in the bottom of the 7th after a triple by Lakyn Breesawitz scored Kelsey Logan and Emily Esquivel.  

  • The rally would not be quite enough as Amherst won the game 8-3.

Emily Esquivel: 4-4, 1 R, 1 RBI  

Lakyn Breesawitz: 1-4, 1 3b, 2 RBI  

Kendall Weber: 1-2, 1 R, 1 BB  

 

Vs UW-River Falls:Box Score 

  • The Falcons would score 11 runs on 13 hits as they jumped on the Blue Jay pitching staff.  

  • The Blue Jays would load the bases in the bottom of the 6th to try to keep the game alive. They would score a run after Payton Dudenhoeffer hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Emily Esquivel.  

  • Westminster would be unable to score more runs, leaving 2 runners stranded as the game ended with a final score of 11-1.

Payton Dudenhoeffer: 0-2, 1 RBI  

 

Vs Carleton:Box Score 

  • The Knights would hold the Blue Jay offense to 2 hits total in the game while scoring 7 runs on 13 hits. Winning the game 7-0.  

  • The Blue Jays would threaten in the top of the 4th after Madelynn Kordik reached on a lead-off hit by pitch. Kelsey Logan followed suit with a walk to put runners on second and first with no outs. Westminster would record three straight outs, leaving runners on 1st and 2nd after a fielder's choice got Kordik out at 3rd.

Haylee Chandler: 1-3, 1 2B 

Kelsey Logan: 0-2, 1 BB  

 

Vs Tufts:Box Score 

  • It would be pitchers dual with both starters going the full nine innings.  

  • The Blue Jays would battle against the #1 ranked team in Region 1. Westminster would threaten to take an early lead getting a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd innings but would not be able to drive them in.  

  • The Jumbos would break through in the top of the 3rd, scoring 4 runs. They would go on to win the game 7-0.  

  • Haley Miller would pitch a complete game, striking out 2 batters, and giving up 7 runs on 8 hits, most of which came later in the game. Miller was on point early in the game, shutting down one of the best teams in the country.

Raigan McKee: 1-3  

 

  • The Blue Jays would ride the confidence built up from the Tufts game into the final game of their Florida trip against Knox College.  

  • The Blue Jays would go down 1-0 early after Knox scored a run in the bottom of the 1st.  

  • Westminster's bats would come to life in the top of the 2nd and 3rd, scoring 3 runs in the 2nd and 5 runs in the 3rd to take an 8-1 lead.  

  • The Blue Jays would load the bases in the top of the 2nd after Raigan McKee drew a walk, Mia Turner singled and Kendall Weber was hit by a pitch. Maddie Marrero would draw a bases-loaded walk to bring in their first run of the game. Turner would score on a wild pitch as Weber and Marrero moved up to 2nd and 3rd. Emily Esquivel singled to drive in Weber to put Westminster on top 3-1.  

  • Eva Gannon would single in the top of the 3rd to keep the Jays' bats rolling. McKee would follow her with a single of her own. Turner reached on an error to score Gannon and put runners on the corners for Kendall Weber. After Turner stole second base, Weber singled to drive in McKee. Maddie Marrero would get a base hit to score Turner.  

  • The rally would continue as Marrero stole second bases to put runners on 2nd and 3rd for Emily Esquivel. She would walk to load the bases. A wild pitch would score Weber and move the runners up. Kelsey Logan hit an RBI groundout to first to score Marrero. When the dust settled on the inning, the Blue Jays were on top 8-1.  

  • Westminster would score their final run of the game in the top of the 4th inning on a bases-loaded walk by Esquivel.  

  • The Blue Jays would close the game out and pick up their fourth win of the season, winning the game 9-1.

The Blue Jays will look to ride momentum into the conference. They will be back in action after spring break when they travel down to Columbus, Mississippi, to take on the Mississippi University for Women to start SLIAC play on Saturday, March 30th. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
