Blue Jays Sweep Red Devils On Senior Day

Fulton, Mo 4/20/2024- The Westminster College softball team hosted the Eureka College Red Devils in a Saturday afternoon doubleheader on senior day. The Blue Jays would hold on to win game 1, 5-4, after the Red Devils scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning. In between games, the Blue Jays honored their six seniors. In game 2, the Blue Jays took an early 3-0 lead and secured the sweep winning 5-3. Westminster improved to 6-28 on the season and 2-10 in the SLIAC with 4 games remaining. Eureka falls to 9-21 on the season and 1-9 in the SLIAC.  

 

Game One: Box Score 

  • The Red Devils scored in the top of the 2nd to take an early 1-0 lead.  

  • Westminster would answer in the bottom of the 3rd inning with Maddie Marrero drawing a leadoff walk. Emily Esquivel reached on an error to put runners on 1st and 3rd. With one out, Kelsey Logan reached on a fielder's choice after Marrero was thrown out at home on the play. Ellie Bedsworth was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Eva Gannon. The senior would deliver a 2 RBI single to left field to score fellow seniors, Logan, and Esquivel, to put the Blue Jays on top 2-1.  

  • Esquivel scored Felicity Kirby on an RBI single to right field in the 4th to make it 3-1. Kirby would score Haylee Chandler in the 5th after laying down the sacrifice bunt on the safety squeeze. Ellie Bedsworth drove in Esquivel after an RBI base hit up the middle to make it 5-2 Blue Jays.  

  • Eureka would score 2 runs in the top of the 6th to make it 5-4. With two outs in the inning and the game on the line. The Red Devil batter would have an 18 pitch at bat before flying out to left field to end the game, 5-4.  

  • Payton Dudenhoeffer started for the Blue Jays and pitched her 2nd straight complete game. She would go 7 innings, giving up 4 runs, 1 earned, on 7 hits and struck out 2 batters. She improved to 4-11 on the season.

Emily Esquivel: 1-3, 1 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB  

Game Two: Box Score 

  • Eureka scored 1 run in the top of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead.  

  • The Blue Jays responded with a 3-run inning in the bottom of the 2nd. Haylee Chandler started the inning blasting a single to right field. Felicity Kirby singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Maddie Marrero drew a walk to load the bases. Emily Esquivel hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Chandler. Madeline Kordik hit a 2 RBI single to score Marrero and Kirby to put the Blue Jays on top 3-1.  

  • The Blue Jays would score a run in the 5th and 6th to go up 5-3 and went on to win the game and complete the sweep.  

  • Mia Turner started for the Blue Jays and recorded her 2nd career complete game. She went 7 innings, giving up 3 runs on 8 hits. She is now 1-3 on the season.

The Blue Jays will be back in action on Wednesday, April 24th when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the Webster University Gorloks. Game 1 is set for 3:00 PM.
