Fulton, Mo 2/16/2022- The Westminster women's college basketball team held senior night Wednesday as they honored the careers of Abbie Reece (Cape Girardeau, Mo. / Cape Central), Corrie Reece (Cape Girardeau, Mo. / Cape Central), Reese Arnold (Lonedell, Mo. / Washington) and Amorette Rodriguez (Los Angeles, California / Whittier) before taking on the Blackburn College Beavers. The Blue Jays scored a season-high in points with the win over the Beavers 101-60. The victory brings them to 15-9 overall and 11-2 in the conference.
Arnold led all scorers with 24 points; Corrie Reece scored 14, freshman Annette Ramirez (Sarcoxie, MO / Sarcoxie) dropped in 14 as well. Abbie Reece and Shelby Kurtz (Camdenton, Mo. / Camdenton) rounded things out, scoring 10 points apiece in what was an all-around team effort.
Arnold got things started, causing the Beavers to turn the ball over on the opening possession and recorded one of her two steals. The steal led to an Arnold elbow jumper off an inbound play to get the Jays on the board 2-0. The Beavers were game early on and had the Blue Jays down 7-5 with 6:52 left in the opening quarter. Blackburn held the lead one time, and it only lasted 30 seconds. It was all Blue Jays from there. The Blue Jays would take the lead back, going up seven at one point. The quarter ended with Westminster leading 18-15.
The Blue Jays would impose their will on Blackburn in the second quarter. They went up 37-24 off a Jodie Bass (Boonville, MO / Boonville) baseline jumper with 4:18 to go in the first half. The Beavers battled back, cutting it to eight near the end of the quarter. Westminster would close out the half scoring five unanswered points and go into halftime with a 42-29 lead over Blackburn.
The Jays put the game away in the third period on the way to scoring a season-high 101 points. They would shoot 47% from the field; 48% from the three-point line, going 15 for 31. The Blue Jay defense caused 23 Beaver turnovers that resulted in 26 points. Westminster also grabbed 49 rebounds, 13 being offensive rebounds.
The Westminster women's basketball team are firing on all cylinders as they head into the final regular-season game on Saturday when they travel to St. Louis for a matchup against the Fontbonne University Griffins. The game will tip at 5:00 p.m.
