Vernon F. Scheiter, ’77 IND, earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Westminster after majoring in Economics, Business Administration, and Physical Education. During his time at the College, Scheiter was a decorated Blue Jays athlete who excelled at both cross country and track and field. During his time with cross country, the Blue Jays placed second in NAIA District 16 in 1973 and won NAIA District 16 in 1975 and 1976 when he was captain. Additionally, the cross-country team qualified for NAIA National Championships in 1974, 1975, and 1976, respectively. In track and field, Scheiter served in 1977 as team captain. In addition to team titles, he was the NAIA District 16 Mile Champion each year from 1974 to 1976 and was runner-up, to a teammate, in 1977. That year, Scheiter received another tremendous accolade by placing third in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships for the indoor mile and thus earned NAIA All-American status. To this day, Scheiter holds the Westminster indoor mile record. Ultimately, the Blue Jays track and field team would place 10th in the NAIA National Championships in 1977.In reflecting on his athletic career at Westminster, Scheiter would like to recognize his teammates for their collective hard work together during cross country and track and field training that took place mornings and afternoons during any weather, seven days a week, across gravel back roads, highways, and fields, adding up to 100 miles per week. “Stride for stride, they were there with me,” he says. “Thank you.” Today, Scheiter is happily retired from a successful career in the airline industry. He was instrumental in developing United Parcel Service Cargo airlines, which now is the second largest of its kind in the world. Scheiter lives in La Grange, Kentucky, with his wife, Donna, of 37 years. They have two daughters, Emily and Erin.
