Blue Jays Fall In Game One Of Four Game Set

Omaha, NE, 2/26/2022 – The Westminster College baseball team didn't think it would play this weekend after the ice and snowstorm that hit the Mid Missouri area on Thursday cancelled their weekend home series with Transylvania University.  Nebraska Wesleyan University reached out and the two programs agreed to meet in Omaha, Nebraska to play a four-game set with the Prairie Wolves.  Game one started off good for the Blue Jays as they scored in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.  The Prairie Wolves would score eight unanswered runs to take control and cruise to a 9-2 victory.

Parker Schnieders (Jefferson City, Mo. / Helias) got things going for the Blue Jays in the first with a one-out double. Derek Shikles (New Bloomfield, MO / New Bloomfield) walked with two outs and then Hayden Hirschvogel (Jefferson City, Mo. / Jefferson City) came through with a two out RBI single through the right side to bring home Schnieders for the 1-0 lead.

The Blue Jays would push another run across the plate in the top of the fifth. Ben Parks (St. Louis, Mo. / Parkway North) walked with two out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Schnieders scored Parks on his second double of the day to bring the score to 8-2 in favor of the Prairie Wolves.  NWU would add another run in the bottom of the sixth to account for the final score of 9-2.

Schnieders led the way for the Blue Jays offense going 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Bode Gebbink (St, Joseph, Il. / St. Joeseph-Ogden) got the start for the Blue Jays, and he labored through three innings giving up six runs, all of them earned, on seven hits. He struck out two and walked one.  Tyland Lackey (Caldwell, TX / Caldwell) would come on in relief working two innings giving up two runs on three hits with one walk.  Jackson Kespohl (Columbia, MO / Hickman) came in to work the final two innings giving up one unearned run on three hits while walking one.
