Blue Jays Split With Griffins

Clayton, MO 4/26/2025- The Westminster College baseball team split the series with the Fontbonne University Griffins. The Blue Jays won game 1, 6-2, and dropped game 2, 3-2, to move to 16-19 on the season and 8-8 in SLIAC play.

Game 1: WC 6 – FBU 2

Westminster would load the bases at the top of the first inning and take a 1-0 lead after Cameron Schlegl got hit by a pitch to bring in Keli'I Price from third. The Blue Jays would strike again in the top of the fourth after Aden Pecka hit a double down the right field line to drive in Schlegl to make it 2-0. Fontbonne scored in the bottom of the fourth and would tie the game 2-2 after finding themselves with a bases-loaded situation. Troy Romero singled in the top of the 5th to bring Price to make it 3-2. Price hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to bring in Sam Alles to make it 4-2. Then Alles singled to left center field to drive in two runs in the top of the ninth, Brett Montgomery and Beno Ballard would score on the play.

Derek Archer picked up the win for the Blue Jays to go 4-2 on the season. He would go six innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits and striking out 7 batters. Jack Page would pick up the first save of his career after pitching three innings, striking out four batters in the process.

Game 2: FBU 3 – WC 2

The Blue Jays struck first in the top of the first inning with a sacrifice fly from Brett Montgomery to Keli'I Price from third to take an early 1-0 lead. The Griffins would answer in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1 and then took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 2-1. Montgomery would hit another sacrifice fly to score Troy Romero this time to tie it all up at 2-2. The Griffins would take the go-ahead lead in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead and would hold it for the rest of the game.

Charlie Schweepe would go five innings for the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out seven.

 

The Blue Jays will be back in action against Monmouth College on Wednesday, April 30th.
