Blue Jays Soar to 3-1 Victory Over Spalding

10/10/2024 Fulton, MO- The Westminster College men's soccer team showcased an outstanding performance Thursday night, defeating Spalding University 3-1 at Kent & Judith Mueller Stadium.

The Blue Jays (2-7-2, 1-0-2) broke the deadlock late in the first half. In the 39th minute, Alexander Christian scored his first goal of the season off a free kick from thirty yards out, giving Westminster a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Building on their momentum, Westminster doubled their advantage in the 61st minute, Jack Hughes, using his head, netted his second goal of the season, assisted by Kaedyn Royer's corner kick, making it 2-0. Just moments later, in the 62nd minute, Adam Luetkemeyer found the back of the net off an assist from Noah Naumann, extending the lead to 3-0.

Spalding (6-4-2, 3-1-0) fought back and managed to reduce the deficit in the 72nd minute bringing the score to 3-1.

Despite being outshot 25-10, the Blue Jays demonstrated exceptional efficiency in front of the goal. With seven shots on target, they converted three into goals, achieving a 43% conversion rate on shots on goal. This contrasts with Spalding's six shots on target and only one goal, highlighting Westminster's superior finishing.

Goalkeeper Toby Hughes was instrumental in securing the win, recording five saves against a relentless Spalding offense that tallied 25 shots and 17 corner kicks. Despite Spalding's pressure, the Blue Jays' defense held firm. The defensive unit, comprising players like Trey White, Tucker Jones, and Alec Bell, effectively neutralized Spalding's offense, especially during set pieces.

The win marks Westminster's first conference victory of the season, enhancing their standing in the SLIAC. Up Next, Westminster will travel to Greenville, IL this Saturday, October 12th to play against Greenville University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm.
