Westminster Men's Wrestling Team competes in NWCA College Open National Championships

Louisville, KY, 1/7/2021- The Westminster College men's wrestling team traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to compete in the NUWAY College Open National Championships against some of the best D2, D3, JUCO, and NAIA schools in the country.

Will Harper, Christopher Corley, and Montgomery Mills would all three compete with Mills finishing 4th overall in his weight class and the team scoring a total of 18.5 points.

Will Harper (Plano, Tex. / Homeschooled) would compete at the 165-pound weight division and won one of his three matches. In the first round Harper would take on Luke Hopkins (Baldwin Wallace) would lose by pinfall at the 1:47 mark. Harper then moved on the consultation bracket and would defeat Will Esmoil (Coe). In the second round of the consolation bracket Harper would be defeated by Spencer Wambeke (Concordia-Moorhead) via pinfall at the 2:35 mark. Harper did not place in the overall standing; however, he did score 2.5 points towards the team's overall score.

Chris Corley (Tipton, MO / Tipton) would compete in the 185-pound weight division and won one of his three matches. In the first round Corley squared off against Patrick Adamczyk (Ancilla Marian University) and would win by pinfall at the 1:47 mark. Christopher would move on to the second round and faced off against Nate Barrett (Ashland), Corley lost via pinfall at the 1:20 mark. After moving on to the consolation bracket, he would go against Jonathan Bishop (Averett) and would lose by major decision 18-7. Corley did not place in the overall standings, and he was able to score a total of three team points.

Montgomery Mills (Hartsburg, Mo. / Father Tolton) would compete in the 197-pound weight division and would win two of his four matches after receiving a first-round bye. In the second round Mills won by major decision 24-12 over Garrett Steele (UNC Pembroke). In the quarterfinal round, Mills won by decision 12-5 over Nasser McCummings (Averett). In the semi-final round, Montgomery would square off against Bryant Wilkinson (Bellarmine) and would lose by pinfall at the 1:52 mark. Following the loss, Mills competed in the third-place match against Jamar Christian (Averett). Christian would win that match after Mills suffered an injury and would be unable to compete. Montgomery would finish fourth overall and scored a total of thirteen team points.

The Westminster men's wrestling team will compete on the mats again when they travel to face off against Central Methodist University.
