The Westminster baseball team extends their winning streak to 10 games with Sunday's two-game sweep over MacMurray College. The 5-0 game one shut-out win gave junior Deion Hughes his fifth career shut-out win, breaking the Westminster career record. He also tied the Westminster career win record with 17 total. The Westminster Blue Jays went on to win the second game, 3-1. They are now 19-8 on the season and 14-4 in conference play.
Game One
Freshman Nick Bohlmann led off the second inning with a double to left field. He advanced to third on an overthrow by the catcher and was brought in with sophomore Tanner Branneky's single to left field. The second run of the inning came from freshman Adam Mundle's sacrifice fly to center field. Junior A.C. Long tagged up and came home, bringing the score to 2-0, Westminster.
Bohlmann led off the fourth inning with another double, and was advanced to third with Long's sacrifice bunt. Senior Cam Backes brought him in with an RBI single to center field.
In the sixth inning, the Blue Jays added two more runs to the board. With one out and two on, Hughes singled up the middle to bring in Ta. Branneky. Junior Tyler Branneky then hit a single to left field, bringing in Mundle. The Blue Jays loaded up the bases with two outs, but a line drive to the third baseman ended the inning.
MacMurray had one hit in the seventh inning, but the Blue Jays held them from scoring to end the game with a 5-0 shut-out win.
Hughes pitched the complete game shut-out win. He pitched the seven innings, threw 65 strikes, allowed just three hits and struck out six.
Backes and Bohlmann each had two hits, and Bohlmann scored two runs.
Game Two
Game two remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. Hughes led off with a double to right-center, and with one out and one on, senior Tim Chambliss hit his sixth career home run over the left-field fence.
MacMurray scored one in the fifth inning off a ground out RBI to bring the game to 2-1, Westminster.
The Blue Jays scored again in the eighth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Backes singled to start off the inning, and was brought to second with a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Connor Hager. Ty. Branneky hit an RBI single to right field to bring in Backes before the Blue Jays hit into a double play to end the inning.
The Blue Jays held MacMurray to three quick outs in the ninth inning to win their 10th straight game with the 3-1 win.
Junior pitcher Will Miller pitched the complete-game win. He pitched nine innings, threw 80 strikes, struck out seven, walked none and allowed just one run.
Chambliss led the offense with a hit and two runs batted in. He also had 11 putouts.
The Blue Jays travel to Elsah, Illinois on Tuesday, April 28, to play a doubleheader at Principia. Game one starts at 5:00 p.m.
