Men's Basketball Edged Out By Fontbonne, 67-60

The Westminster men's basketball team was edged out by Fontbonne University on Wednesday evening, 67-60. 

The Fontbonne Griffins grabbed an early lead, but two buckets by junior Matt Murphy gave the Blue Jays the 4-2 lead. The Griffins knotted up the game twice throughout the next three minutes, but senior Brandon Moore scored five to take the 9-6 lead. 

Freshman Tanner Cochran hit two from the foul line to put the Blue Jays up by five, 11-6, but the Griffins pulled back the lead with 11:33 remaining in the half. 

Junior Jordan Jensen tied up the game at 14-14, but the Blue Jays were unable to take the lead. 

With 5:38 left in the half, Murphy put the game within one, 22-21. The Griffins finished the half with a 8-1 run to hold the 30-22 lead.

The Blue Jays blasted a 9-0 run in the first 7:23 of the second half to take the 31-30 lead. The Griffin's finally put their name on the board with a free throw to knot up the game and a three-pointer to take the lead. 

The Griffins hit a jump shot and a three to take a six point lead before the Blue Jays called a timeout. They increased their lead to 12 points with 6:38 remaining in the game.

The Blue Jays were unable to bring the game within 10 until just over a minute left in the game. Murphy hit a jump shot, and senior Verdis Lee Jr. dunked to put the game within six, 58-52.

The Griffins extended the game to an eight point gap with 26 seconds in the game. The Blue Jays fouled with 13 seconds on the clock and the Griffins drained both from the foul line.

With :07 on the clock, junior Tanner Gentges drained a three to put the Blue Jays within five. The Blue Jays quickly fouled, but the Griffins drained two more from the foul line to win the game 67-60.

Cochran led the Blue Jays with 16 points, and Murphy added 13 to the loss. Murphy led the Blue Jays down low, pulling down nine boards. 

The Blue Jays look to snap their streak in St. Louis on Saturday with a 3:00 game versus Webster.
