Blue Jays Defeated By Greenville, 64-51

The Westminster men's basketball team fell to Greenville College on Saturday, 64-51. The loss brings the Westminster Blue Jays to 2-10 in conference play and 3-16 overall. 

The Blue Jays took an early five point lead and held onto it until Greenville hit a jumper with 13:21 on the clock. The game was back-and-forth and knotted up four times. With 4:29 left in the first half, Greenville started a 5-0 run to grab the lead.

Junior Aaron Jackson Jr. drained both from the foul line with 58 seconds left in the half to bring the Blue Jays within two, but Greenville knocked down a pair of free throws to extend their lead to four points, 26-22.

Senior Verdis Lee Jr. grabbed a bucket with 00:09 on the clock to send the game into halftime with Greenville leading by two, 26-24. 

Junior Tanner Gentges scored 30 seconds into the game to tie it up. A free throw shot by freshman Tanner Cochran took the lead, but Greenville took it back with a bucket seconds later. 

The Blue Jays stayed within five, but they could not find the lead. Lee Jr. and junior Matt Murphy each brought the game within one point with just over 10 minutes left in the game, but Greenville held their ground and kept the lead.

Junior Kellen Brondel hit a jumper with 6:26 on the clock to bring the Blue Jays within two, but Greenville answered with a 7-1 run. With 2:44 to go, Greenville held a 10 point lead over the Blue Jays, 56-46.

The Blue Jays were unable to connect with the basket in the remaining 2:24. They fouled to stop the clock, but Greenville went 4-5 from the foul line to take the 64-51 win.

Gentges led the Blue Jays offensively with 15 points and three assists, and junior Brandon Drum led the boards with seven. Lee Jr. added 10 points and five rebounds.  

The Blue Jays continue their home streak on Wednesday, February 4th, with a 8:00 match-up with Iowa Wesleyan.
