Blue Jays Fight on Senior Night, Fall to Fontbonne 86-80

The Westminster men's basketball team scored 56 points in the second half, but came up short on Senior Night to Fontbonne. The Westminster Blue Jays lost 86-80, putting them at 4-13 in the conference. 

The Fontbonne Griffins jumped out to a 10-2 lead just three minutes in and extended their lead to 16 points with 8:36 left in the first half. A three by junior Matt Murphy brought the Blue Jays within 11, but the Griffins hit two shots to go back up by 16. The Blue Jays headed into halftime down by 17, 43-26. 

The Griffins continued to hold a strong lead in the second half, and with 12:53 left in the game, they took a 20 point lead. With 7:15 on the clock, freshman Jordan Jones was fouled on the way up. He scored the bucket and the extra point, bringing the Blue Jays within 15. Junior Jay Zalis hit a three minutes later to cut the game to nine points.

Senior Brandon Moore hit a shot on a fast break, bringing the game within eight, and junior Aaron Jackson Jr. scored a jumper to bring the Blue Jays within five with 1:31 to go.

The Griffins went 3-4 from the foul line to go back up by eight, but Cochran hit a layup to bring the game back within six with 46 seconds left. The Griffins went 2-2 from the line to take back the eight point lead, but Moore brought the game back within six with 21 seconds left. The Griffins held the ball in the final seconds, ending the game with an 86-80 loss. 

Cochran went 9-9 from the foul line to lead the Blue Jays with 20 points. He also led with four rebounds. Moore added 13 points, and senior Verdis Lee Jr. had four steals and three assists. 

The Blue Jays will travel to Louisville, Kentucky to close out their season at Spalding University on Saturday, February 21. The Blue Jays will play at 3:00 p.m. EST.
