Westminster Men's Golf Notches Best SLIAC Finish Since 1997

PEORIA, Ill. - Westminster men's golf tallied a third-place finish in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, the best finish in the program since 1997.

"I"m happy we established ourselves as one of the top teams in the league again," said Westminster Head Coach Tom O'Donnell. "I'm hoping that we can continue this upward trend in the program in the coming years." 

On Monday, the Blue Jays played 36 holes and ended the day in third, with the top finish coming from Kurt Matheney, who was in 10th place after day one. Zane West-Derby put together a solid day two, shooting an 80 for the second time in the tournament to become the top finisher for Westminster with a final score of 243, finishing in 12th place. 

Matheney fell behind a few strokes in the final 18 holes, finishing with a final of 247 which placed him 14th. Aubrey Nelson added a 15th place finish with a score of 248, with his best round coming in at 81. Mikie Ryback finished 24th while Corey Schmidt tallied a 35th place finish. 

As a team, Westminster shot 999, nine strokes better than the fourth-place finisher Blackburn. Webster took home the top score of 889, while Fontbonne finished second with a score of 962. 

"I'm proud of the way that our guys competed all year," said O'Donnell. "I'm excited to see what next season brings, even more so because we have all of our guys returning for the 2019-20 season."
