Blue Jays Win Streak Snapped By Webster

Fulton, Mo. – The Westminster College women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday at Historic Gym.  The Blue Jays fell 73-59 against the defending SLIAC Champions Webster University Gorloks. 

The Blue Jays struck first on a Madison Schaeffer lay up to go up 2-0 later A Kallee Dowler jumper gave the Blue Jays a lead at 6-4. It was the last lead the Jays would enjoy.  The visiting Gorloks would use a 14-0 run over the next 4 minutes to take a double figure lead.

The Blue Jays would rally in the second quarter on the strong play of Abby Nichols and Avylina Powel-Qualo.  A couple inside buckets by Nichols and a three-point play by Powel-Qualo cut the Webster lead to 35-29 with only 2:22 left to go in the half. Unfortunately, for the Blue Jays, the Gorloks would turn up the pressure and close the half on a 12-0 run to take a 47-29 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter the Gorloks would extend their lead to 51-29 before Abbie Reece would hit a three-pointer off a pass from Reese Arnold that ended a 16-0 run that spanned both halves.  The Blue Jays would chip away at the lead and would cut it to 59-51 with 7:03 left to play in the game on a Powel-Qualo jumper. 

The Gorloks were able to push their lead back to double figures and made enough plays to finish the game in their favor 73-59.

The Blue Jays were led in scoring by Dowler with 11 points. She was the lone Blue Jay in double figures. Nichols had a strong game for the Blue Jays off the bench scoring nine points and a pulling down a team leading seven rebounds.  Schaeffer and Powel-Qualo pulled down six rebounds each for the Blue Jays who outrebounded the Gorloks 40-29.

The Blue Jays will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Greenville University for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
